Opioids include prescription medicines used for pain and illegal drugs such as heroin.
They interact with systems that regulate pain, breathing, and stress responses. A prescription does not automatically make use safe or harmful, and using an opioid does not by itself establish a disorder. When opioid use becomes difficult to control or interferes with health and daily life, professional assessment can identify needs without reducing you to a label.
