Let’s start off by defining what self care really is. Self care is not just spoiling yourself or living with a “treat yourself” motto. Authentic self care is looking out for your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. It is doing what we need to do in order to be an all around healthy and well person.
1. Give yourself time to wake up and start your day.
We’ve all done it before. The alarm goes off, you hit snooze a few times and try to get a few precious moments of extra sleep. This can set us up for a frantic moment when next thing you know you’re rushing around getting ready and running out the door. A scattered mind can be a tough thing to work through in order to go into your day with mindfulness and intention. Give yourself time to start your day. Start off on the right foot and set yourself up for success instead.
2. Feed yourself!
This may sound silly but how often have you been so wrapped up in what you’re doing that you realize you missed lunch! Our body needs fuel to get through our day. Without eating we set ourselves up for blood sugar drops and frazzled thoughts. Be kind to yourself and eat three meals a day with healthy snacks in between. Bonus points if you remember to eat protein during those three meals!
3. Get some fresh air
Open space can make for a better headspace! Sounds like some old wive’s tale advice but give it a try and see what happens. Step outside, get some sun and deep a few breathes of fresh air. At the very least it will pry you away from your desk for a few minutes and give you a chance to stretch your legs.
4. Affirm yourself
We waste a lot of time waiting for someone else to notice our accomplishments. Take control and give yourself some praise! Tell yourself the words you need to hear. If this feels silly try affirming yourself just by really looking at yourself in the mirror. Appreciate the beautiful individual you are. Nobody will ever be exactly like you!
5. Connect with others
Loneliness can be suffocating. Reach out and let yourself be known. Go to a meeting, have dinner with a friend, or send a text if you’re feeling a bit introverted. Invite someone into your world. We’re social creatures and thrive in connection with others.
