You can easily find drugs, like cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin, here. In fact, all of these drugs are some of the most commonly abused substances by women in Colorado.
“Colorado has the third-most-serious drug problem out of all states. This state has the highest percentage of both teenage and adult drug users in all of America.”
Fortunately, anyone struggling with an addiction can easily find the addiction treatment help they need in Thornton, CO. There are plenty of rehabs, recovery meetings and other addiction resources here. Learn more about what’s available in this guide.
Seek Professional Addiction Treatment
Trying to overcome a substance use disorder (SUD) on your own can be difficult. You might run into intense withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can become overwhelming and can cause you to relapse. You might even overestimate your resolve to get sober. Getting clean is not as easy as what most people would like to believe.
To give recovery your best shot, you should seek professional assistance. This will often involve seeking help from an alcohol or drug treatment center in Thornton. There are many different options available, and each rehab facility will offer different programs. Some rehab centers are gender-specific, which mean that they treat a specific gender. Gender-specific rehabs are important because they offer specialized addiction treatment services.
You’ll also have two different levels of care to choose from. They include inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. Both treatment options possess unique qualities that may make them more suitable for some patients. Learn more about how to find the best rehab in Colorado below.
There are about 2 inpatient drug rehab centers in Thornton. These centers offer an intense level of care. Patients move into the rehab facility. They stay there until they complete their treatment. This can take anywhere from 28 to over 90 days. Denver Women’s Recovery offers a 30-day inpatient program.
Patients who opt for this program will usually go into a detox program first. Detox usually takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days. After the detox process is complete, patients receive other addiction treatment services. They may receive individual counseling, family therapy, group counseling, behavioral therapy, massage therapy, and more.
Inpatient treatment programs are usually recommended to those who have a moderate to serious addiction. They usually will have struggled with an addiction for some time. They may experience dangerous withdrawal symptoms, like delirium tremens.
Residential treatment programs are able to offer some unique advantages and disadvantages. Take a look at the table below to figure out whether inpatient programs are right for you.
PROS:
- Around-the-clock care. Dealing with an addiction can be scary. Many patients don’t know what to expect. They’d like to have a professional stay with them throughout their recovery, and that’s exactly what an inpatient program can offer. Nursing staff and other medical professionals will monitor the patient’s vitals 24 hours of each day. They will be able to respond quickly should any changes arise.
- Structured program. Inpatient programs are structured for success. Each and every day is also scheduled and structured. Patients will learn how to live a healthier life, like waking up early and going to sleep on time.
- Access to therapeutic services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One of the most difficult things about recovery is getting over the psychological symptoms. With inpatient care, patients have access to therapeutic services whenever they need it. This can help keep them motivated and on the right track.
- Removal of negative influences. Inpatient rehab programs have the right furniture, design and more. There are no negative influences whatsoever, so patients can focus on their recovery without getting distracted.
- Opportunity to build a support network. Many patients will often bond while receiving inpatient treatment. They learn about one another and the struggles that led them to addiction. The people that you meet at an inpatient rehab can become lifelong friends
CONS:
- Overall affordability. Inpatient treatment programs tend to be a bit pricier than outpatient programs. Some inpatient programs can cost over $30,000 a month. Fortunately, some health insurance programs will cover the cost of inpatient care. Verify your insurance with us to see whether you are covered.
- Limited freedom and flexibility. As patients will need to stay at the rehab facility for the duration of the treatment, they have little freedom and flexibility. They will need to take an extended leave of absence from school, work and home responsibilities.
You’ll find about 5 outpatient drug rehab centers in Thornton. Outpatient services are a bit different from inpatient services. Patients do not live at the treatment center. Instead, they’ll travel to the rehab center whenever they have an appointment or whenever they need treatment.
Outpatient programs can go on for months, if not years. There are actually many different types of outpatient programs. They differ in the level of care that they can provide. The different types of outpatient treatment programs include:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). With a PHP, patients will usually receive treatment at least 5 days a week. They participate in a variety of therapies for 4 to 8 hours a time. This is the most intense type of outpatient care.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). With an IOP, patients commit to a minimum of 9 hours of treatment each week.
- Standard outpatient program. There is no set commitment with a standard outpatient program.
Outpatient programs are for those who have more discipline or for those who don’t need as much help. Patients should make sure that they have a secure and stable home environment before they opt for outpatient care. Otherwise, they may be more tempted to relapse, as they are constantly exposed to triggers and stressful situations. Many patients will transition from a residential inpatient program to an outpatient program.
PROS:
- Flexibility and freedom. Do you have kids at home? Are you unable to take an extended leave of absence from work? If that’s the case, you’ll benefit from an outpatient program. You can pick and choose when you’re free for treatment. You can still live in the comfort of your own home, and go to work or school.
- Affordability. Outpatient care is much more affordable in comparison to many other types of treatment methods. Patients will usually spend about $10,000 a month on treatment, depending on whether they need medical detox or not. Also, most insurance plans will cover the cost of outpatient care.
- An opportunity to test your recovery skills on a daily basis. As patients still mingle with society, they have an opportunity to put their skills to the test. They can learn more about what works for them and what doesn’t.
CONS:
- Limited access to care. Although patients can always up the amount of treatment they receive, they won’t have professionals at their side at all times. With that said, they can always reach out for more help whenever they need it.
Sober living homes are available for those who have completed an addiction treatment program, but still need more assistance. These patients may not feel ready to tackle everyday life on their own yet.
With a sober living home, recovering addicts basically rent a room in the home. They are responsible for paying rent and all of their expenses. They may not use any drugs or alcohol while at the sober living facility. They are also free to come and go as they wish, and are not required to stay the night there.
With that said, those who live in a sober living home will be assigned some chores. They will also need to take part in group therapy with their housemates.
There are 9 sober living homes in Thornton, CO.
A key part of addiction recovery is having the right type of people around you. If you are surrounded by toxic people, you will only get dragged down. For the sake of your sobriety, make sure that you are surrounded by people who support your recovery. Peer support can make a huge difference. In fact, for some people, it’s the difference between failure and success.
Even if your friends and family support your recovery, it may still be difficult for them to understand what you’re going through. If they haven’t struggled with an addiction, they will not be able to relate with you or give you the advice that you need. The best solution for this is to attend recovery meetings at least once a week. Those who need more support should go to meetings more frequently.
There are many different types of recovery meetings. We’ll explore some of the options available below.
AA Meetings in Thornton
Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as AA, is one of the oldest 12 step programs out there. These types of recovery meetings were first created by recovering alcoholics. This means that the principles of these meetings were designed by people who were struggling with an addiction to alcohol.
AA follows twelve steps and principles. Members put their faith in a power greater than themselves. They learn how to make amends to those they have wronged, and how to make a personal inventory of their shortcomings.
There are many different types of AA meetings in Thornton. There are open meetings, which are open to the general public, and closed meetings, which are reserved for recovering alcohol abusers only. Meetings include daily reflections, step studies, book studies, speaker discussions and more. These meetings have helped millions of alcoholics worldwide learn how to stop drinking or, at the very least, manage their drinking.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)
Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) is a 12 step program for adults who have grown up in families with alcoholic parents. These meetings help adults come to terms with their childhood. They’re also ideal for those who have brought the toxicity of their childhood to their adult life. Many of these adults have dysfunctional relationships even when they’ve grown up. They often end up marrying or getting into relationships with other addicts.
These adults have some common characteristics. In fact, they often share these common behaviors:
- A fear of abandonment
- A fear of authority figures
- The inability to differentiate between love and pity
- A harsh judgment of themselves
Unfortunately, there are no ACA meetings in Thornton, CO at this time. Those who are interested in these meetings can find meetings in nearby cities, like Denver, Broomfield and Wheat Ridge.
SMART Meetings
Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings are not 12 step programs. They follow 4 unique points that help them learn how to better deal with addictive behaviors. They learn how to cope with cravings and manage negative thoughts. These meetings believe that members are in control of their own fate. With a little bit of help, they can manage their addictive behaviors and lead a sober life.
Unfortunately, there are no SMART meetings in Thornton, CO. The closest meetings are in Aurora, Arvada and Denver.
Additional Addiction Information:
Drug and alcohol overdose death rates have been climbing in almost every state in America. Colorado is no exception. In fact, the latest statistics show that more Coloradans died in 2017 from an overdose than at any other time in the state’s history. The same studies anticipate these numbers to continue to rise in upcoming years.
Anyone who abuses drugs or knows someone who does should learn what to do in the event of an alcohol or drug overdose. After all, quick action can save lives.
The first thing that anyone should do is CALL 9-1-1. The one mistake that many people make is that they wait. They think that the overdose victim may come around or get better. The longer that the person waits, the more in danger the overdose victim will be in. As the overdose continues, the victim will sustain a lot of permanent damage.
Provide the 9-1-1 operator with as much information as you can pertaining to the victim. This includes his or her gender, age, weight and height. Also, include as much information about the overdose as possible. This includes the substances that were taken, the dosage that was taken and more.
After calling 9-1-1, stay with the victim. Do not leave his or her side in case his or her condition worsens. If the victim stops breathing, perform CPR. If possible, try to keep the victim awake. DO NOT try to get the victim to vomit, eat or drink.
If the victim loses consciousness, place him or her to the side and in the recovery position, like in the video below. This will prevent the victim from choking on his or her own vomit. This can lead to asphyxiation.
Opioid and opiate overdose rates are skyrocketing all across the nation. This is largely attributed to the fact that prescription opioids have become a huge problem. In the past, doctors have prescribed prescription opioids, like oxycodone, like candy. While these prescription painkillers are effective, they’re also highly addictive.
Fentanyl, in particular, has become a huge problem for many Americans, especially women. Fentanyl overdose rates are skyrocketing because only several micrograms of this drug are needed to cause an overdose.
Fortunately, there is a “cure” for opioid overdoses. Naloxone is a drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It comes in the form of either a nasal spray or an intramuscular injection. Once naloxone is administered, its effects will kick in within 2 to 5 minutes. The effects of naloxone will also last approximately 90 minutes. With that said, it’s possible for a victim to continue to overdose once the effects of naloxone wear off. Due to this reason, it’s vital that the overdose victim receives medical attention as soon as possible.
Anyone can administer naloxone. The law protects the person who administered the drug from any civil liabilities as long as they call 9-1-1. Naloxone can be found at rehab centers, outreach centers, and at over 200 pharmacies in Colorado.
This medication is fairly easy to administer. It’s not complicated at all. Learn more on how to administer naloxone from the video below.
